Enoetna: Vendemmia - Grape Harvest Festival
Wine in Sicily has a history thousands of years old! An oenologist once said: "Sicilian wine encompasses the essence and spirit of 20 civilizations!“. Today Sicily relies, for its wine production, on 140 000 hectares of vineyards, most of which are of white grapes.
This is the reason why from mid/late September to the mid of October, Sicily comes alive with one of the most important times of year for the Sicilian agricultural community: "la Vendemmia", the grape harvest. This is the moment when the grapes on our vines, having absorbed all the sun and the freshness that Sicily can give, are ready to be hand-picked and brought into the cellar to begin vinification!
In Piedimonte Etneo and in Santa Venerina people celebrate the grape harvest along the main streets and squares with a week-end enhanced with events to remember the centuries-old techniques of winemaking that here go back even to the Greeks, and to discover Sicilian barn dances with folk groups, wine and food tasting, handcraft markets and concerts.
The two picturesque and quite towns on the slopes of the Mount Etna turn into unique and special locations full of festive spirits to celebrate the grape harvest.
In order to live the grape harvest up you can rent one of our villas! Choose your favorite one from our "Holiday rentals" section!
